Getting Married at Catamount Ranch
One of the things I love about Catamount Ranch is how much variety there is within one location.
The property sits among the mountains and open landscape of the Yampa Valley, with Catamount Lake adding another layer to the scenery. Depending on how you plan your day, you can move between the lake, surrounding fields, indoor spaces, and mountain views without needing to spend a huge portion of your wedding day traveling between locations.
That makes a difference photographically, but it also makes the day feel easier.
Instead of constantly thinking about where you need to be next, there's more room to actually spend time with your friends and family.
Catamount Lake House Weddings
The Catamount Lake House is one of the main gathering spaces on the property and gives you an intimate home base for the celebration.
It feels distinctly Colorado without leaning too heavily into the traditional mountain lodge aesthetic. The lake and surrounding landscape are really the centerpiece, which gives you plenty of flexibility when it comes to florals, tablescapes, fashion, and the overall design of the wedding.
For couples planning something thoughtful and design-forward, I think that's one of the biggest strengths of Catamount.
You can let the setting speak for itself and build everything else around it.
Wedding Photos at Catamount Ranch
From a photography perspective, Catamount Ranch gives us a lot to work with.
The open landscape creates beautiful natural light throughout the day, while the lake and mountains give us several completely different environments for portraits without having to leave the property.
But I don't think a wedding at Catamount needs to become one long portrait session.
My approach is a mix of documentary and editorial photography, captured on both film and digital. I'll step in and give direction when it's helpful, then leave room for the rest of the day to happen naturally.
Some of my favorite photographs at mountain weddings are often the quieter ones in between everything else. Friends talking before the ceremony, someone fixing a veil, drinks outside during cocktail hour, grandparents watching the dance floor, or everyone piling together at the end of the night.
Catamount gives those moments an incredible backdrop without the backdrop needing to become the entire story.
Film Photography at Catamount Ranch
Catamount is also an especially beautiful setting for film photography.
I photograph every wedding with a combination of digital and 35mm film, and the natural colors around Steamboat translate incredibly well to film. The greens and warmer tones of summer, blue water, changing aspens later in the season, and softer mountain light all have a quality that feels timeless on film.
For couples who want to lean even further into that look, I also offer additional film coverage and Super 8 wedding films.
Super 8 works especially well here because there's so much movement and atmosphere to capture. Walking through the property, wind moving through the landscape, people gathering by the lake, cocktails outside, dancing, and all the little pieces of the day that feel completely different when you see them moving again years later.
When to Get Married at Catamount Ranch
Summer and early fall are especially beautiful times for a wedding in Steamboat Springs.
Summer brings long days and green mountain landscapes, while September begins to introduce the golden aspens and cooler evenings Colorado is known for.
Weather can change quickly in the mountains, though, so I always recommend building some flexibility into your timeline. A little extra breathing room makes it much easier to work around afternoon weather, shifting light, or simply spending a little longer with your guests when you're having a good time.
And if the weather does something unexpected, that's often part of what makes a Colorado wedding memorable.
Staying in Steamboat Springs
Another major advantage of Catamount Ranch is its proximity to Steamboat Springs.
Your guests can stay in town and enjoy everything Steamboat has to offer while still experiencing a wedding that feels tucked away in the mountains.
