Colorado Winter Elopement - how to stay warm tips and advice

colorado elopement photographer.jpg

I hope you find these tips helpful with planning and preparing for your winter elopement, whether it’s in Colorado or another beautiful winter wonderland. I’ve been able to photograph in the Colorado winters for both elopements, engagements, adventure sessions and have put these tips together based on experience.

When you’re dealing with really cold temperatures, don’t skimp on warm clothes and gear. Always bring hot tea or coffee in an insulated thermos, because you’re going to want it.

Are you wondering if a winter elopement is the right choice for you? Message me and I’m happy to chat with you and answer any questions that you have.

1. WARM BOOTS

I can’t stress this enough. You need waterproof/resistant boots. You can add extra protection with a can of silicon spray. (spray your boots a day before so it has time to dry)

2. WEAR A THERMAL LAYER

If you’re wearing a dress, you 100% need to wear thermal leggings and this goes the same for thinner suits.

I wouldn’t suggest wool, but insulated leggings and a sleeveless top is perfect.

3. WEAR WARM GLOVES, SOCKS + HAT

It’s 100% important to keep your hands, feet and ears warm. You can always take off gloves and a hat for photos.

You can also just get married in your ski and snowboarding clothes too.

4. BACKUP LOCATION

If you’re eloping in Colorado in the winter, you need to have a backup location.

Freezing wind, temps and snowstorms can all change everything really fast. Don’t stress about it, just have a backup plan and be ready to be flexible.

5. KNOW YOUR LIMITATIONS

This is not meant to scare you, but altitude sickness is real. Don’t over do it, if you’re not up for a ton of hiking for your elopement, especially in the winter, find an option or two that doesn’t require it.

(I know lots of good spots)

6. HIRE LOCAL

It’s super important to support the local businesses and work with local photographer’s that have put the time and energy into scouting locations and know the area well.

It’s especially important when getting married outdoors as the weather can change drastically.

7. HAVE SO MUCH FUN!

Colorado winters are MAGICAL! 100% recommend getting married in Colorado.

The Colorado sunshine warms winter days up and is epic for photos.

Just plan ahead, be prepared and have an amazing celebration.

(and consider snowshoeing, it’s a blast!!)
